When it comes to your Toyota engine, spark plugs make a big difference. A dirty, worn out or inferior spark plug can cause inconsistent firing, which may result in reduced performance and fuel economy.
Below are descriptions and benefits of these spark plugs. Please be sure to use the correct spark plug for your Toyota engine; the wrong spark plug can negatively affect fuel economy and overall performance.
Before the spark plug fires, the U-Groove traps the fuel-air mixture, then produces a large spark for efficient combustion and reduced fouling. U-Groove spark plugs meet original equipment replacement intervals and original specifications on your Toyota. Introduced inthis system promotes greater combustion efficiency by firing the spark plugs twice as often as a standard ignition. With that in mind, the ideal spark plug for TDI-equipped Toyotas is the Dual-Ground Electrode design, which delivers optimum performance and durability while maintaining the original recommended change interval.

Remove the power connectors from the ignition coils by pressing down on the release tab and pulling them straight off. The two ignition coils on the passenger side of the vehicle can easily be lifted out.
If you encounter any resistance, try rotating them a bit first to break free the rubber boot from the top of the spark plugs. Remove Two 10mm Bolts Pulling Out Wiring Harness Wiring Harness Removed The ignition wiring harness strip will need to be removed in order to pull out the two ignition coils on the driver's side.
Remove the two 10mm bolts on the ignition harness by turning them counter clockwise with the ratcheting wrench. Once the wiring harness is out of the way, you can gently lift out the last two ignition coils on the driver's side. Turn the ratcheting wrench counter clockwise to loosen and remove the old spark plug.
Genuine Toyota Spark Plugs
Your spark plug wrench should either have a rubber insert or a magnet to securely hold the old spark plug as you lift it out of the cylinder head. Be sure to only remove and replace one spark plug at a time to help prevent any debris from dropping down into the cylinder.

Some manufacturers recommend that you should not use ant-seize since it can lead to over tightening. So if you do use anti-seize, just be sure to not over tighten the new plugs. Insert the new plug into the spark plug socket and lower it down into the engine cylinder. Then continue slowly tightening it until you feel the crush washer give way and the spark plug is just past hand tight.
If you have a torque wrenchthe spark plugs should be tightened to 11 ft lbs if you applied anti-seize to the threads or 18 ft lbs if you did not apply anti-seize.
Be careful to not over tighten the spark plugs, especially if you have applied anti-seize lubricant. Dielectric Grease On Boot Replace Spark Plug Coil Then apply a small amount of dielectric grease around the opening of the rubber boots at the bottom of the ignition coils.
The dielectric grease will help prevent the rubber boots from becoming stuck to the top of the spark plugs and also keep out any moisture. Slide the four ignition coils down over the new spark plugs until they are fully seated. There are quite a number of performance spark plugs in the market that seek to improve performance by its ability to generate unique and stronger sparks. Every spark plugs manufacturers seemed to have their own explaination of their product superiority against other brands.
It was really hard to differentiate. To ensure that I made the right choice, I decided to do some research to understand the basic functions of spark plugs. Yes I said it right, spark plugs have dual function. It works as a heat exchanger by extracting heat generated from the combustion chamber and transfer it to the engine cooling system. Though its function is to remove heat, it has to retain sufficient heat to prevent fouling.
It requires minimum degrees C to perform self cleaning, to discharge carbon deposit at the tip.Huisarts hoeven maat
The picture on the right are examples of dry and wet fouling. If you push your engine often and frequently touches the redline at 6,RPM, your engine will be working at high temperature most of the time.
This may result overheating at the insulator tip. The plug on the left shows the glazed appearance that is resulted from deposits accumulated on the insulator tip melted at high temperature. To ensure that the spark plugs function optimally, the temperature at the end of the plug's firing end must be kept low enough to prevent pre-ignition and high enough to prevent fouling, therefore selecting the right heat range plug is very important.
There are some who advise owners to install higher heat range cold plugsto gain better performance at high speed. Using a higher than recommended heat range, may result more incidents of fouling that forms carbon deposit that may impedes ignitability. There are two nuts on the top of the engine cover and two on the front edge.
Set the four nuts aside in a safe place.
Set the plastic engine cover aside in a safe place. Electrical Connector Press Release Tab - Pull Off Loosen 10mm Bolt I recommend only checking or changing one spark plug at a time to further reduce the chance of having something fall down in to the cylinders.
Push in the release tab on the electrical connector before sliding it off the end of the ignition coil. Rotate the ignition coil back and forth a few times to make sure that the rubber dust boot at the bottom of the ignition coil is not stuck or "frozen" to the top of the old spark plug.
Pull the ignition coil out of the spark plug well and set it aside in a safe place. I like to wrap some painter's tape around the socket to hold it in place to the extension bar to keep the socket from getting stuck down in the spark plug well. Gently loosen the old spark plug by rotating it counterclockwise. Try to avoid using excessive force to loosen the old spark plug to prevent from cracking the ceramic part of the plug.

If you don't have any penetrating oil, try spraying some WD or warm up the engine for about 10 to 15 minutes to help expand the metal engine block. Inspect both sides of the old spark plug. If the electrode end of the old spark plug looks ashy white, the plugs might have been exposed to high temperatures such as overheating or they might be the incorrect heat range for your driving conditions or local climate.
On the other hand, if the old spark plug is dark grey or covered in black soot, the engine may be burning oil and should be examined by a professional mechanic. If you have a spark plug gap gaugecheck the gap on the new spark plugs. They should be pre-gapped from the factory to the correct specification. The owner's manual specifies a gap of 0. Push the new spark plug in to the socket. Your socket should have a rubber insert or a strong magnet to securely hold the spark plug in place.
Carefully lower the spark plug down in to the well and spin it in by hand in the clockwise direction until it makes contact with the cylinder head. Spinning it in by hand will help prevent the new spark plug from becoming cross threaded. If you are re-installing the old spark plug, only tighten it to a tiny fraction of a turn past hand tight.
If you are installing a brand new spark plug, tighten it to just past the point when you feel the new crush washer collapse. Do not over tighten the spark plug to prevent from cracking the ceramic body or stripping the aluminum threads. If you used anti-seize grease lubricant, be very careful to not over tighten the spark plug. Double check that the new spark plug is tight before moving on to the next steps.List of wards in rivers state
The dielectric grease will help keep out debris or moisture to maintain a reliable electrical connection. Lower the ignition coil in to the spark plug well and rotate it back and forth a few times to help distribute the dielectric grease. Re-insert the 10mm ignition coil bolt and spin it in a few turns in the clockwise direction by hand to prevent it from becoming cross threaded. Try to avoid over tightening the bolt to prevent from cracking the plastic ignition coil housing.
Push the power plug straight on to the ignition coil until it clicks securely in to place. Spin on the four nuts in the clockwise direction a few turns by hand to prevent them from becoming cross threaded.
Try to avoid over tightening the nuts to prevent from cracking the plastic engine cover.
Start the engine and listen for any strange sounds that might indicate a problem such as a faulty ignition coil, a disconnected power plug or a loose spark plug. Be sure to record the spark plug change in your car's service records. If you found this guide to be helpful, please consider making a small donation by clicking on the PayPal. Thank you!
